Chapter Four
Luke, Honey, and Di took the General and headed out towards the old barn near the mill. Luke parked the General up on a hill where they had a good view of the barn and anyone coming or going. Daisy drove Lulu in Boss’ big white convertible. After a little rigging, Bo had a small platform on the driver’s side of the car. He and Trixie knelt down, gripped the side of the convertible, and were well hidden from sight, though Bo’s long frame looked a bit awkward folded up. He grinned at Trixie. They approached the old bridge, and as they passed some large bushes, Bo and Trixie let go and rolled into the bushes, unseen. Trixie landed awkwardly, half on top of Bo, who grinned impishly and pulled her close for a long kiss. “Bo,” she murmured, “we’re on a mission.” “Mmmhmm,” he kissed her once more and they got to their feet, creeping towards where Lulu had thrown the bag. They saw the shorter man, heading down into the brush for the bag, and ran towards his truck. Bo hoisted Trixie into the back and joined her, the pair squishing down amongst the junk. Finding a dirt tarp nearby, Bo pulled it over them. Trixie was pressed up tight against him as they heard the man get into the truck and shut the door. The engine started and they were off. “You know,” Bo whispered in her ear, sending shivers down her spine, “this is kinda fun. I’d much rather be in here with you than Luke.” “You’re so romantic,” she whispered sarcastically. His hand slipped into her curly hair and he kissed her lightly, his lips moving down her throat. Trixie touched the side of his face lightly, shifting slightly to allow him better access to her throat. The truck suddenly stopped. “Darn it,” Bo grumbled. Trixie laughed silently, brushing her lips against his. “Later,” she whispered. The heard the driver leave, and poked their heads up under the tarp cautiously. They were at the old barn. “C’mon, they must be inside,” Bo rose up and hopped out, lifting Trixie down. Taking her by the hand, he led her around to the side, where there was a dusty window they could peer in. *** “There they are,” Luke pointed.
The three saw Bo and Trixie get out of the back of the truck. Honey’s heart was racing. Bo and Luke weren’t allowed to handle guns because of their probation. Trixie only knew self-defense. How on earth were they going to overpower those two big men and rescue Boss? *** Trixie knelt and picked up a slender rod. When the two men had come out to the truck, no Boss with them, they slipped inside through the back. Boss wasn’t inside either, but a bunch of boxes were. “Bo,” she said softly, standing up. “Bo, look at this.” “That’s dynamite,” his blue eyes met hers and they turned to look at the crates. A quick look revealed they were all labeled ‘explosive’. “Look at all this ammunition,” Trixie murmured, “There really is enough here to blow Hazard off the map!” A hissing sound interrupted them and they turned as a stick of dynamite came hurtling towards them. The sparks caught a piece of hay and lit into flames immediately. Bo grabbed Trixie by the hand and they raced towards the door. *** Outside, Luke was watching the barn anxiously. The two men had exited rapidly, and started the truck, when the shorter one suddenly ran back in. His heart almost stopped when he thought they had spotted Bo and Trixie. But it was only seconds before he dashed outside and hopped in the truck. The truck peeled out. Honey had whistled the Bob White signal to Trixie, but Luke was afraid they wouldn’t hear it. A moment later the barn exploded. *** “Trixie!” Honey screamed. “Trixie!” Luke caught her by the waist. “No, you can’t! Stay put!” It was futile for the slender girl to wrestle the former Marine. He held her tightly as she sobbed and hit her fists against his powerful chest. Di sank to the ground, stunned. Trixie couldn’t have been in that blast. Surely she had gotten out. Trixie always got out. Trixie always made it out. Luke stared at the building engulfed in flames in the distance. He could only pray they got out the back. *** Trixie felt the explosion before she heard it. The ground rumbled and she felt her body lift up, when something heavy slammed into her and shoved her to the ground. She felt Bo’s body lying on top of hers, his chest over
her head. Around her debris hit the ground but she lay still. After what felt like an eternity, it stopped. “Bo?” she whispered. There was no answer. Rolling over, she heaved the tall man off of her. “Bo!” There was blood leaking down his forehead, and his eyes were shut. His usually tanned face was a scary shade of gray. “Oh no. Bo, wake up!” she leaned her head over his face. He wasn’t breathing, but he had a pulse. Quickly she tilted his head back to begin rescue breathing. His hand touched her hair and she realized he was kissing her. “Bo Duke!” she hit him in the chest as he grinned at her. “How dare you!” “One way to get a kiss from you,” he grinned roguishly and sat up, pulling her close. Trixie gave into his advance as their tongues explored each other gently, then urgently as they realized they had barely escaped death. When he ended the embrace, he frowned at the tears in her eyes. “Trix, we’re all right. This is just a bump,” he gently wiped her tears from eyes and hugged her tightly. Trixie stared back at the burning barn. “Bo, the others!” she gasped. “Honey and Luke and Di must have thought we were in there!” “Oh no,” he muttered. They got to their feet, and with Trixie’s hand firmly in his; they hurried towards the bluff where their partners were. *** Luke had called the explosion in on the CB, calling for all available help in the area. It was a small barn but he had no idea how much explosives material had been inside. Honey had gone silent, Luke trying to reassure her that surely they had gotten out. Bo would have gotten her to safety, he assured her. Bo had a charmed existence, and he would do anything to protect Trixie. Luke paced, not daring to get close to the burning barn, as smaller pops of explosion could be heard. “Luke!” Luke’s head snapped up as Honey turned her head and Di sat up. “Luke! Honey!” It was Bo! Luke raced toward the edge of the bluff and spotted his cousin and Trixie making their way up. “Bo!” he grabbed his cousin by the hand and pulled him up, then reached for Trixie. Both were covered in dirt and soot and Bo had blood running down his face. Luke hugged his cousin tightly as Honey ran to Trixie and threw her arms around her. Di wept quietly as she joined them, the three girl standing in a big hug. “Good thing Bo has long legs,” Trixie joked weakly. “He got me out of there right before it exploded.” “Luke said he would,” Honey murmured. “Oh Trixie, I was so scared!” “You know me better than that,” Trixie hugged her friends tightly. “Thank God. Mart would have killed me if I had to tell him I let you go in there!” “Yeah, well, the boys don’t need to know and we’ll talk about that on the way home,” Trixie said quickly and quietly. Luke and Bo had made their way over to them and Luke hugged her. “Roscoe’s on his way, for the little good he’ll do, and the Hazzard Net should have people here in a moment.” “Where did the crooks go?” Trixie asked. Luke pointed in the direction they went as Bo hugged Trixie to him. “We’ll never find them now. They’ve got too big of a lead,” he sighed. *** Lulu received another phone call. They wanted another hundred thousand dollars, and this time, if they saw anyone other than Lulu and a driver, they would shoot JD on the spot. “Now wait just a purple pea pickin’ minute! You civilians listen to me!” Roscoe howled, “I’m the Sheriff and it’s up to me get my little fat buddy out of there! You Dukes had no right to go in there and now you’ve messed everything up! I oughta cuff ya and stuff ya and arrest ya for interferin’ in po-lice business!” “Rosco, just shut up for a minute while figure this out,” Bo snapped. Rosco’s face grew red. “Rosco, come sit with me,” Lulu pleaded to her little brother. Grumbling, Rosco did as asked. “New drop off point. Means they’ve moved Boss.” “Not necessarily,” Honey interrupted Luke. Trixie nodded. “You’re right.” The boys exchanged glances. Sometimes they wondered if the girls communicated mentally. “Right about?” Luke asked. Trixie smiled sheepishly. “They have moved Boss, but probably not to a new place. I’m willing to bet they keep Boss with them. That way they can grab the money, dump Boss at the county line, and be gone.” “You are good,” Luke laughed. Trixie grinned and glanced at Honey. “We’re a team,” she said simply, “and I could be wrong.” “I doubt it. The new drop off point is pretty close to the county line. If we can get Enos over there without being seen, we can catch them once they release Boss,” Luke said softly. Rosco was busy consoling his sister. Enos was in conversation with Daisy. Luke caught Daisy’s eye and signaled her to get Enos outside. They joined the pair a minute later and Luke outlined the plan. “What if I call Sheriff Little over in Chickasaw too?” Enos suggested, “He can be waitin’ on the other side.” “Good idea Enos. You know he won’t believe us. Daisy, get Lulu and let’s go,” Bo nodded to his cousin. *** The Duke boys and Bob White girls waited in the General Lee. Enos was hidden at the county line in his police car. And a little bit down the way over the Chickasaw line waited Sheriff Little, one of the meanest sheriff’s in the state, who would have loved to nail the Dukes for crossing the county line, but so as long as he had the chance to catch someone that day, he’d be happy. Duke or Wankie. The drop off went smoothly. Lulu left the bag in the middle of the road and Daisy turned the car around, retreating. The pickup truck came roaring around the corner, stopped long enough for the big driver to grab the money, and headed for the county line. They stopped a few feet away and shoved a blindfolded and bound Boss Hogg out. Laughing, the Dukes heard from their hiding place the men thanking Boss for
all the money and they took off. Bo was holding the CB, “Enos, get ready.” The General Lee peeled out after them. The truck sped up but Bo pushed the pedal down. Luke grabbed the CB when he realized they had changed course. “Enos, this is Luke! They’re headed for the split road towards the pond! Head for the pond near the county line!” “Hold on,” Bo said grimly to the girls. The road split and while the truck headed to the right, to the lower path, the General sped to the left, to the high road. A moment later they braced as the General flew off the edge and over the truck, landing hard. Bo spun the car sideways and the truck was forced to stop. The boys got out, and so did their adversaries. Bo grimaced. This was one time he wasn’t going to argue with his cousin who got the big guy. Luke had been a prize-winning boxer and Marine trained. “You two boys just can’t stay out of our way, can you,” Cletus, the tall one growled. “Well, you got a pile of money that don’t belong to you. We’re here to collect,” Luke replied. Trixie, fed up with waiting, pulled herself out of the General, ignoring Honey and Di’s protests. “You rubes need girls for your backup?” Billy Joe, the short one laughed. Bo glared at him; unaware Trixie was a few feet behind him. Di and Honey stayed in the car, perched on the windowsills. “You gonna need backup for them words, hoss,” Bo shot back. Billy Jo started towards him as Cletus faced off against Luke. Trixie normally would have admired Bo’s fighting form, but he was outmatched by the ex-con, and she winced as Billy Jo’s blow made Bo stagger back. Luke doing a lot of dodging with the massive Cletus, managing to land a few blows. Honey and Di had climbed out of the general, wanting to help but unsure how. Bo, still unaware Trixie was behind him, managed to trip Billy Jo and grabbed him by the arm, flinging him behind him, towards a large tree-and Trixie. Trixie scrambled to move but the big man grabbed her, and Bo turned to land another blow. Horrified, he froze as Trixie shrieked when Billy Jo grabbed her, his big hands going around her neck. “Luke!” he shouted. Luke didn’t look until Cletus grinned and stepped back. “Looks like it’s our favor,” Cletus smirked. With a sinking feeling Luke turned and closed his eyes. Billy Joe was holding Trixie with one arm around her chest, pinning her arms, the other meaty hand wrapped around her neck. Honey and Di were frozen as they realized the predicament their friend was in. Neither had any doubt the man would choke her. Sirens broke the silence and Enos came racing around the corner, followed by Rosco. “Now you listen here!” Enos shouted, his high pitch voice more nervous than usual getting out with his gun drawn, “You let that girl go or I’ll shoot!” Billy Jo looked at Cletus who shook his head. Neither carried a gun, and the bullet could move faster than Billy Jo’s chokehold. Billy Jo let go of Trixie. She sprinted to Bo, who grabbed her and held on tight. Honey exhaled, and Di leaned against the General, immensely relieved. “I got you dirty scalawags!” Rosco howled as he slapped cuffs on Cletus, “I’m gonna cuff ya and stuff ya! I got you on charges of kidnapping-that’s a federal offense you know, exto-exhil-well, blackmail and assault on that little girl! Oooo I’m gonna put you away for a long time! I love it, I love it!” Rosco was trying to stuff Cletus into the car. Enos had Billy Jo cuffed and in his car and hurried to Trixie. “Miss Trixie, you all right?” the deputy asked. Trixie nodded, grateful for Bo holding her. “Daisy done picked up Mr. Hogg, he’s all right. We got state troopers coming’ for ‘me.” “Good work Enos,” Bo grinned at his old friend, “I bet Daisy’ll be real ‘ppreciative of you.” With a big grin, Enos laughed his high pitched giggle. Trixie just grinned at him as her friends joined them. *** So the Dukes and the Bob White girls were able to return Boss Hogg, the stolen money and the blackmailed money to Hazzard. Lulu Hogg was so grateful she donated a chunk of the money to the orphanage in honor of the amateur detectives-despite Boss’ protests. Boss, while happy to be alive was starving, and was heading home with Lulu for a big home cooked meal- after telling Rosco to arrest the Dukes for conspiracy. “What?” Bo demanded, “We just helped save you!” “And got that barn blown up which caused a forest fire! That’s reckless endangerment,” Boss smirked. Bo made a motion to the girls to get in the General quickly, which they did. Trixie started the engine. “Now Boss, you know we had nothin’ to do with those explosives. We were trying to save you!” Luke said angrily as Bo half turned to the General. “Like I believe that! Rosco, you take 'em on down to the jail!” “Now, Mr. Hogg, if it wasn’t for the Dukes, we never would have found you,” Enos said timidly, “They’re the heroes.” “Heroes my foot!” Boss thundered. Luke slipped away from the arguing pair and Bo slid into the General. Luke slid over the hood and was still sliding in as Bo peeled out, leaving a furious Hogg waving his arms at Rosco. “Shoot, ain’t nothin’ ever changes with those two,” Bo grinned at Trixie, who smiled back. *** Bo and Trixie walked in silence, hand in hand. Over Bo’s shoulder was slung a blanket, so they could sit on the grass. He led her to his favorite spot, hidden away near some trees. “This is where I used to sit and stare up at the stars,” he said, spreading the blanket down. He and Trixie made themselves comfortable, Bo lying on his back, Trixie lying at his side, her head resting against his chest. “I wish you didn’t have to go back tomorrow,” he sighed. “I know,” she said wistfully, lying on her side, head propped up on one elbow. “I think I could have plenty of mystery fun down here in Hazzard.” Bo
laughed, rolled on his side and stared into her eyes. Trixie felt her heart racing, wondering if she had the nerve to do what her body wanted. “Just mystery fun?” he whispered. Touching her chin gently, Bo brought her into a sweet kiss that rapidly became passionate, his body leaning on hers. “You sure ain’t like the girls around here,” he whispered, burying his head in her curly hair. Trixie laughed. “Mart says no town could handle two of me.” “No man either,” Bo murmured, his lips brushing against her ear. “You’re something special, Trix.” “So are you. None of the guys are like you,” he ran her fingers through his soft hair. “They all lecture me. Except Dan.” “No lectures here. You’re the most fun I’ve ever known. You’re my best girl,” he reminded her with a grin. She giggled. “You’re the best guy I know,” she brushed her lips against his and his body pressed her down. “My only girl,” he murmured, pulling her up against him. Hesitantly, her hand moved to undo the remaining buttons on his shirt. She knew Mart and Di had been having sex for a while now, and she longed to know what it was like to be physically loved by a man. And particularly by Bo Duke. “Trix,” his breath was ragged as he caught her hand. “What do you think you’re doing?” “Something I want to,” she murmured. Bo pulled back for a minute and searched her eyes. “You deserve better than me,” he said quietly. “You deserve better than a boy with nothin’ from the country and no real future, and you really deserve better than your first time bein’ outside in the woods on a blanket.” Trixie shook her head. “I decide what’s good for me. And where, when and with who I want to take this step with,” she said quietly but firmly, “And I’m deciding you’re good for me. And here, now and you, are perfect.” Bo hesitated again. “I don’t wanna be remembered as some country boy who done took a real special part of you. I couldn’t bear to have you thinkin’ of me as a scalawag,” his beautiful sapphire eyes stared down at her. “That won’t happen, Bo,” she murmured, pressing her lips against his. “I know what I want.” “I don’t have no protection,” he murmured, his hands beginning to wander her soft curves. Trixie giggled and reached into her jeans pocket. “I do.” *** At the same time, Luke and Honey were walking the farm, her slender hand enclosed in his bigger, rough hand. “It’s been great having you here,” Luke said quietly. Honey smiled at him. “We’ve had so much fun. It’s a shame we have to leave tomorrow. I know Trixie would love to stay,” she laughed, “she seems to think Hazzard is more exciting than Sleepyside.” “You girls seem to find plenty of excitement,” Luke smiled back at her as they stopped walking and she faced him. “Sleepyside is definitely lacking in excitement like Hazzard,” she murmured, looking up into his electrical blue eyes, “but it’s definitely lacking more than that.” “Such as?” without thinking, he was drawing her closer, enveloping her slender frame in his arms. “You,” she whispered, her hazel eyes meeting his. His answer was a gentle kiss, his hand pressing against her back slightly as their passion lit and he was crushing her against him as she wrapped her arms around his neck. Honey’s knees were weak when he finally released her, and they stood, arm around each other. Brian had kissed her a hundred times, but never left her legs feeling like jelly. “What took you so long?” she murmured, with a small smile. Luke swallowed hard, and held her slender frame close. “I’m too old for you, Honey.” “No, you’re not,” she laughed. “Age doesn’t matter.” “It does to me,” he ran his hand over her soft hair. “You’re goin’ be leavin’ tomorrow and this whole visit will seem like a dream to you.” “No, Luke,” she murmured, laying her head against his chest. “You’re wrong. You’re so very real to me.” “Only now,” he held her close. “I gotta tell you, Honey, you’re the first girl that’s ever made me feel this way.” “What way?” she asked, admiring his broad chest. “That I could be happy with you. With just one woman,” he tilted her head up. “I never thought I’d be able, or wanna give up my freedom, but when I’m with you, I think about it.” Stunned, Honey opened her mouth to speak but her legendary tact was gone. “Wow,” she finally murmured. He looked surprised. “Wow?” “I’ve never had a guy tell me anything like that before,” she admitted. “Brian was…it was just accepted that end up together, and he told me he loved me but. . .he never would have said something like that. I don’t think.” The last thing Luke wanted her thinking of was Brian, so he kissed her again to distract her. *** “I told the two of them enough that we should see some happy couples tonight,” Diana smirked as she and Daisy giggled over hot chocolate. “I’ve never seen the boys get so cow eyed for a couple of girls before,” Daisy admitted. “It’s great.” “What about you?” Di asked gently. “Why don’t you have anyone?” “Oh well,” Daisy shrugged, “I have lots of offers but no one’s ever appealed to me, except Enos. And he’s so honorable and straight laced-“ “Sounds like Jim and Brian,” Di said dryly. Daisy nodded. “Yes. I love adventure too, and I want to meet someone that makes me look dazed, like Trixie has been since she met Bo. The few guys that have come through Hazzard were all con artists. I fell for every one of them,” she said sadly. Di reached over and squeezed her hand. “You’d love Dan,” Di grinned. “Someday you guys need to come up to Sleepyside, and I’ll introduce you. Dan’s got the bad boy look going, minus the bad boy attitude. Well, these days, anyway.” They spent the next couple hours dishing men and Dan, and wondering if their friends were enjoying themselves. ***
Bo and Trixie were walking slowly back towards the farm, having no concept of time. Before they came into view of the house, Bo stopped and pulled her to him. “You ain’t regrettin’ nothin’?” “No,” she smiled and leaned into him for a gentle kiss, but he pulled her closer. “Good,” he buried his face in her curly hair, holding her tight. He didn’t want her to leave. “Bo, I’m fine, I promise,” she laughed. His dark blue eyes stared into hers. “Trix, you mean the world to me. I just don’t want you to go,” he murmured. She nodded. “I know. I want to stay too. Maybe you can come up to Sleepyside next summer.” Bo shook his head sadly. “Boss would never let us out of the county that long, and it would violate our probation to just go.” “Then maybe we’ll have to come back,” Trixie smiled, running her hands down his face. They attempted to smooth his wavy blond hair but no luck. “If your brothers let you come back,” he smiled sadly. She shook her head. “My brothers have no say in the matter. And I’m not exactly going to tell them about what just happened.” Bo locked his arms around her waist. “You are,” he smiled, “my best, favorite, and only girl.” Trixie laughed. “And you’re my best, favorite and only guy.” Their lips met gently one more time. “Come on. We need to get back before they send out a search party.” *** Honey was dizzy from kissing Luke, her lips swollen and her body aching for more. Damn these honorable men! She thought. While his hands had wandered over her body just a little, she knew he wasn’t going to let things go further, and she wanted them to. Finally, the split apart, and Luke gazed at her lovingly, his hand running over her hair. “We should go back to the house,” he murmured. Disappointed, she nodded in agreement. Next time, she thought, I need to fall for someone with a just a little less honor. EPILOGUE The next morning, the Dukes came to see the girls off, and the boys loaded their luggage for them. There was a lot of hugging, and Trixie fought the urge to cry. She and Bo had said a special good bye last night after making love, but it still hurt. He pressed his lips together as he watched her sadly. He hugged her tightly and gave her a final, gentle kiss goodbye. Daisy hugged the girls, and promised to write. Luke hugged Honey tightly, his eyes lingering on her as to memorize her face. Cooter took several pictures for them with the last of Honey’s film and there was one more round of hugging before the girls got into their car. Trixie started the engine, and glanced at Bo one last time, blowing him a kiss. He gave her his roguish grin and the girls headed home. “Keep it ‘tween the ditches!” Luke yelled as they waved. *** The girls were silent for the first few hours, each replaying scenes of the last two weeks in their mind. They had four days to get home, but had promised their parents to go through Atlanta and a different route back to New York, stopping along the way to meet some of Matthew and Madeleine's friends.. Honey and Di never asked Trixie about that last night with Bo, and it would be a long time before their suspicions were confirmed. Honey knew she had left a part of her heart with Luke. Di would miss Daisy’s companionship. It had been nice to not feel on the outside of the Trixie/Honey partnership. Each wondered what would happen when they returned home, and if they would ever see the Duke family again. None of them had a clue as to how their lives had just changed forever.
